Arlene L. Martin's designs for her women's clothing line, Drenna Luna, look spectacular in photographs, evoking old Hollywood glamour with their striking silhouettes.
Some of the stand-outs are her long-sleeved tie-waist dress, fitted two-tone pantsuit, cape dresses and cape blouses.
One can imagine screen siren Angelina Jolie wearing the beautiful, understated peach tie-waist dress whose silhouette is reminiscent of the Atelier Versace green gown she wore to this year's Golden Globes.
Then there's the stunning, sand-coloured sleeveless dress that's covered in tiered scalloped ruffles from top to hem except for the cinched waist.
The Jamaican designer reportedly found inspiration for Drenna Luna's dreamy 2011 Collection during her travels to Botswana, Africa. For instance, she has said that the green, off-white and sand-coloured palettes reflect the country's landscape.
She's also said that, "Silhouettes and some design details are inspired by the favourite of the animals I saw on safari---elephants." CaribFashionTV.com can totally see the shape of an elephant's head and trunk in the picture of the model (above) whose long-sleeved arm is posed in the akimbo stance. Can you, too?

ARTICLE: drennaLUNA inspired by nature

Published: Monday, May 23, 2011
Jamaica Gleaner

From an impressive collection showcase at Caribbean Fashion Week 2010, drennaLUNA is poised to present another awesome collection at this year's CFW. Designer Arlene Martin attributed last year's inspiration to the cathartic ambience of the little paradise situated on Jamaica's westernmost point - Negril. This year, though not nestled in Jamaica, Botswana's rich beauty and awesome presence have sparked the concept behind the collection.

Just hours after presenting her collection at CFW 2010, she was on the first of four flights to Botswana. "What I read did not prepare me for my experience. The country truly undersells its beauty. The beauty I saw was in the wide expanse of land, of which I have never seen. It was in Botswana where I had one of the most memorable life experiences - a safari tour. And those images will forever remain with me, and served as inspiration for the 2011 collection.

"The drive through the country shows the predominantly sandy colour of the land, with hints of green on the small green leaves of most trees - it was only by the riverbed that you saw lush green colours. Flying to Kasane, in the north, we flew over the saltpans - amazing expanses of white and light grey - and then over a tree-spotted landscape through which, if you were lucky enough, you could spot an elephant. The landscape inspired the colours of the collection: sand, off-white and green.

Silhouettes and some design details are inspired by the favourite of the animals I saw on safari - elephants. To effect the fluidity of some elements of the inspiration, light chiffons will be used, while structure will also be a feature in the collection's trousers."

The calmness of the collection also reflects the calm spirit of the peaceful people of Botswana. This is also true to the design aesthetic of drennaLUNA: simple yet interesting silhouettes that accentuate the woman's body.

The drennaLUNA collection will be available immediately after CFW 2011 at Indigo Boutique and through direct orders at www.drennaluna.com.

Indigo Boutique goes 'Loco' for Local Designers

Monday, January 24, 2011 (Jamaica Observer, All Woman)

"It was always my intention to include local designers," says Carmela Richards, owner of Indigo Boutique. "I feel that we have some really talented people in Jamaica, they just don't have the opportunity to showcase their designs." Since last December, Azan has added three designers to the racks of the Indigo Boutique at the Barbican Centre, notably drennaLUNA, Neahlis and Designs by Michsheller. The response over the holiday season was positive, with customers heaping praises on the quality of the designs and fabrics.

Michelle Nuñez is the creative mind behind Designs by Michshell. Having worked for several years in the textile industry, she developed a love for fabrics - their textures, styles, and colours. She shares, "I've always had ideas on how I would use the fabric in fashion, and was always so inspired by new colours on the runways each season. There are really no limits to what fabric can do. Because I do know quality fabrics, I'm not afraid to use it in different styles." She continues, "My line features casual everyday wear and casually elegant items, which I would consider to be semi-formal."

Arlene Martin's drennaLUNA collection features a mix of her resort collection showcased at Caribbean Fashion Week 2010, and a few pieces from her mini holiday collection of formal and cocktail dresses. Martin also 'refreshed' her resort casual line in January, adding a few knits, making it three different collections represented in the store.

Preferring to work with natural fabrics like cotton and silk, her designs are meant to compliment and flatter a woman's figure. "drennaLUNA is for someone who's confident," says Martin, "who can work a simple garment, because she shines through the garment itself. Part of the simplicity is that they are versatile and can be worn or accessorised in various ways." The designer also has 'reversible' pieces, so ladies can get the most wear out of their outfits.

The 'Darling of Dresses', Lisa McIntosh of Neahlis received a warm response recently for her Tie-Dye Butterfly collection, done in collaboration with designer Simone 'Tasha' Gordon. Pieces from this collection along with her Neahlis Signature brand may be found at the Indigo Boutique. Though she has her own boutique, McIntosh says, "It's all about expanding my brand, and not keeping it to myself. Just to know that another boutique is carrying local designers is a blessing."

Having these new designers on board is simply the first step, since Carmela hopes too, to add merchandise from local designers of bags, jewellery and other accessories, to give them exposure.

"Ultimately we are all in this together, and we have to help each other... we have to build this country," she asserts, "... and every industry counts, including the fashion industry."

Today All Woman shares with you creations from three local design mavens - the designs of drennaLUNA, Designs by Michshell and Tie-dye Butterfly.
